Avistra Aviation Consulting was engaged to undertake a pre-feasibility study to determine the level of need and likely commercial viability of domestic and international air freight services to and from Bundaberg Regional Airport.

The pre-feasibility study intended to identify whether there was a genuine case for change for the existing air freight services offered at the airport.

A comprehensive stakeholder consultation plan was designed to maximise input from the local aviation community, exporters, and other stakeholders within the Wide Bay-Burnett Region.

Mayor Jack Dempsey said one of the report’s recommendations was to raise awareness among industry about the current opportunities.

“The consultants recommend a staged approach, maximising current services and encouraging airlines to increase capacity when there is demonstrated demand,” he said.

Bundaberg Regional Council's Airport portfolio spokesperson Cr Greg Barnes highlighted the opportunities identified by Avistra to increase Australian tourism to Bundaberg while global travel is disrupted through coronavirus, and noted that will be Council's focus over the next few years.
