Christmas Island Airport facilitates air transport and logistics operations in support of the local community and significant Commonwealth of Australia border protection activities.

Aviation Projects was engaged to consider options for provision of runway end safety areas that comply with new standards.

The scope of work included:

  • Determination of runway characteristics, declared lengths and revised approach and take-off areas for various options
  • Consideration of Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI) system location and implications to minimum eye height over threshold
  • Analysis of the impact on aircraft operational performance for each option, using publicly available aircraft performance data and by consulting with the major aircraft operator
  • Preparation of construction cost estimates for each option.
