Update to AC 139-10

In June 2026, CASA released Version 1.1 of AC 139-10: Guidelines for Vertical Flight Facilities at Aerodromes Designed for Aeroplanes. This update provides important clarity for aerodrome operators planning to accommodate helicopters and emerging VTOL-capable aircraft.

The key change in Version 1.1 is the inclusion of references to CASA EX18/26 – Aerodrome Markings (Vertical Flight Facilities) Exemption 2026. This exemption allows aerodromes to use the vertical flight facility markings described in AC 139-10 in place of, or in addition to, markings currently prescribed by the Part 139 Manual of Standards.

For aerodrome operators, this is a significant development. As the industry prepares for Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) and future eVTOL operations, operators now have greater flexibility to introduce dedicated helicopter and vertical flight infrastructure using nationally recognised markings and visual aids without waiting for broader regulatory updates.

The update also reinforces CASA's broader vision for integrating vertical flight aircraft into existing aerodromes. Rather than requiring entirely new vertiports, the guidance supports adapting existing runways, taxiways, aprons and other airport infrastructure while maintaining safety through appropriate risk assessments, obstacle protection and downwash/outwash management.

Although Version 1.1 does not introduce major technical design changes, it provides an important regulatory link between the guidance material and the exemption that enables its practical implementation. For airports considering future helicopter, eVTOL or Advanced Air Mobility operations, the update offers greater certainty on how vertical flight facilities can be marked and operated within the current regulatory framework.
