Aviation Projects has had the pleasure of engaging with the Australian airports community during our attendance at recent Australian Airports Association (AAA) State Division meetings in Queensland, Victoria/Tasmania, and Western Australia. These meetings facilitate discussions amongst AAA members on the latest technical and operational issues affecting their businesses and airports, while also providing direct access to government agencies and aviation regulators.
Managing Director Keith Tonkin, and Chief Designer Clenia Dagon attended Queensland’s meeting on the 29th of April. The meeting, titled Nature’s Force, Our Resilience, provided an insightful review of airports and Airservices Australia's response to tropical cyclone Alfred. This brought into focus the need for robust pre-planning, collaboration, and flexibility in the face of extreme weather challenges.
An interesting point of discussion was the growing trend of security incidents involving individuals with mental health concerns, a complex issue requiring careful consideration.
CASA also provided an important update on upcoming changes to international obstacle limitation standards and their own new policy, which will mean that objects under 30 metres above ground level generally won't be considered flight hazards outside of approach, climb, and transition surfaces.
