What is the OLS?
The Obstacle Limitation Surface is a series of defined imaginary surfaces surrounding an airport that protect aircraft during visual operations. Unlike the OLS, these surfaces are designed to protect aircraft flying instrument approach and departure procedures, often extending further from the airport and reaching higher altitudes.
A structure that complies with the OLS may still penetrate a protected PANS-OPS surface, potentially affecting the safety or usability of an instrument flight procedure.
Each development is unique, requiring an assessment based on its location, height, characteristics and proximity to aviation infrastructure.
